99 confusion

o.k., i have had this Savage 99 since i was about 14
every schematic i have seen shows a tang safety, from the 99A on up, this one has a "lever lock" safety only as it slides into a hole in the rear of the lever, locking it closed as well as blocking trigger function.
full octagon bbl w/brass rotary mag and shell counter
so wth model is this one as i can never find one in the books?

whats you serial # I can get real close with that, and even closer with the leverboss code. the leverboss code is on the frame right where the lever bolts on to the frame it should have a number and a letter inside a circle. what calibur is your 99? what dose the buttstock look like? and last whats the forearm look like?

Yours is a model 1899. Try looking it up that way.

Old Magics, I think you have some bad info. Mine also have the lever lock, not the tang lock and they are from the early 50's. The 99 by Bill Murray is pretty much THE book and uses a combination of characteristics to differentiate the different models. It appears that the serial number records do not exist past about 1952 to pin a particular rifle to a year of manufacture, though it can be done prior to that.

How long is the barrel? what caliber? dose it have a saddle ring on the side of the reciever? dose the buttstock have a pistol grip? your gun is an 1899 savage but like the 99 models there are a few different models of 1899. the octigon barrel and the serial # would indecate your rifle to be an 1899A or an early B, but need more info on the stated questions to tell for sure.

Oldmagics If you wanna do some e-mailing we can take the characteristics and take a look at Murray's book and see what we can sort out. You can also go to: http://www.savage99.com/ plug in your serial number and get a date of manufacture prior to 1952. It appears serialization records do not exist after that.

    SavM99.jpg
bbl is 25" loa is 46"

HeDog, the site gives either 1908 or 1909 useing the two sources.
    thanks for the link!

the reason for asking was not able to get any dirrect answer about it, as well as several people offering over $1000 on first sight along with the comment of " it doesnt have the tang safety?! "
had several times thought of doing a refurbish on it, but most of the dings, scratches and burn marks on it i know the stories behind either from my grandfather or because i was there as a young kid...
ya just cant put a pricetag on those kinda memories.
one burn mark is from the day i was born...pop was "home" when the call came that mom was in labor, ran out the door and left a smoke that flipped off the edge of the ash tray and landed right smack dab on the stock and lay un-noticed till later when it had burned completely away. till his dying day he could not remember why it had been out to begin with to get so damaged.
