Weatherby 7 mm Magnum

I mistakenly titled this topic as Winchester, it should be titled Weatherby.
I recently purchased a Weatherby 7 mm Magnum rifle, Vanguard model.
Previously I had a Remington 7 mm Magnum rifle. Unfortunately, it was stolen and I replaced it with the Weatherby.

I have a full box of Remington 7 mm mag ammo left. After purchasing the Weatherby, I read on the owners manual that you cannot use Remington ammo in the Weatherby. I have heard all kinds of conflicting and confusing information on what kind of ammo I can use in the Weatherby rifle I now have. The barrel on the Weatherby says Remington 7 mm magnum.

I have not fired the rifle yet as I am afraid of damaging the gun or myself.
The gun was bought at Wal-Mart so you know I can't get a lot of help there.

Someone told me that Remington 7 mm mag ammo is actually a generic term for that type of ammo and that the Remington ammo will fit in my Weatherby as long as it says Remington 7 mm on the barrel.

Is this correct?

The 7mm Weatherby and Remington Magnums are seperate rounds and are not interchangeable. I believe the Vanguard is only chambered for the 7 mm Remington magnum cartiridge (not Weatherby) and should be so marked on the barrel. If the barrel says 7mm Remington Magnum, then by all means, shoot up the ammo you have on hand.

If you are really worried about it, get the chamber cast. Brownells sell the low temp casting material and it comes with instructions. You can melt it with a propane torch or enven on a stove top. I also agree with the previous observation that if the barrel is marked "Remington" magnum then it probably is exactly that.

The Vanguards are typically NOT chambered for the Weatherby calibers. Weatherby offers the Vanguard as a sort of lower-cost substitute for the Mk V, even though the Vanguards are themselves fine rifles. Your rifle is marked 7mm Remington Magnum, and that is the round it is intended for.

When you chamber a round with your fingers, how does it feel ??

Call Weatherby in Southgate, California with your serial number, and ask them.

A 7MM WEATHERBY Magnum cartidge will not chamber in a 7MM Remington Magnum chamber.

The 7MM Weatherby Magnum is quite a bit hotter, and flatter shooting, with more energy on the target, than the Remington.
