M1 Carbine, By Springfield?

Carbines are being listed on the auction side as "Springfield M1 carbines". Who made them? SA out of Illinois? How do they rate? Good, middle-road, or bad? Thanks, Joe

NO SUCH ANIMAL----UNLESS sPRINGFIELD HAS PURCHASED SOME AND REDONE THEM
    NOT MILITARY EQUIPMENT

Springfield INC. did a run of stripped receivers a few years back. The quality of the gun all depends on who put it together, and what parts they used.

IIRC IMBEL of Brazil actually made the receivers.

Tks, Richbug. However, I'm seeing several Springfield M1 carbines up for auction by several different sellers...and it confuses me. Why haven't there been any for sale before?? It's the "all for sale at the same time" aspect that confuses me. New production? Can all these rifles be home-built? Anyway, here they are:

I'm in the market for a carbine, and want to know if anybody has any sort of heads-up as to bid, or pass them up. Thanks, Joe

Richbug has it right. Springfield Inc ordered a bunch of receivers about 10 years ago, but about that time the supply of USGI parts dried up. They realized they could not economically make cast parts, so they dumped the receivers. Towards the end, they were selling them for as little as $60. A bunch of folks bought them as an investment, & I suspect that this is where these carbines are coming from.

All the guns I see listed have scant descriptions. It appears that they have "no name" barrels of unknown quality. And, of course, they are sold "as is". That tells me all I need to know.

The stock on my Plainfield Franken-Carbine is marked SA, I thought it meant Springfield Armory. Maybe I was wrong.

Neal, you said it all. As-is. (I missed that). I'm gonna walk. Thanks. And thanks to all who responded. Best, Joe.

Kid, Springfield Armory (the government arsenal) made lots of M1 carbine stocks. They also made lots of carbine small parts. In the 1950's, they even made a batch of carbine barrels. And, they overhauled many carbines, after which they stamped their initials on the stock.

But, they never made complete USGI carbines. They never made carbine receivers. And, they didn't make Plainfield carbines, although Plainfields with some of their parts can be found.

Springield Inc, also known as Springfield Armory, Inc, is a commercial company that does not deny who they are, although they don't advertise, "We are NOT a government arsenal, our name is just close."

Edited: OK, this USGI Inland carbine was ordered from CMP last month ($495 + shipping). It's an arsenal rebuild, but all parts (except wood) are new or like new. They will have more available in a few months.

Consider a new one from Auto Ordnance:

or find a receiver and build your own with all new parts:
