S&W 38 Special CTG

I am trying to figure out the value of a S&W 38 Special CTG Model 10-5. Its in excellent condition, is stainless steel with walnut grips. The serial number is D10399, it is also stamped "Detroit Police 14460". It has 5 inch barrel. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

    Need help est date of mgr and estimate of value. Ser # S 976275. 4" barrel. Blue. Grooved rear sight. (not adj.)TOP of barrel markings:Smith and Wesson Springfield Mass USA. Immediately below that are patent dates as follows: Patented Feb 6 06 Sept 14 09 Dec 29 14. Left side of barl- SMITH & WESSON. Right side of barl- 38 S & W Special CTG. The Trade Mark is on the plate on right side. Just forward of the front plate screw it says MADE IN U.S.A. When you flip out the cylinder the #s are 55 7 05. These match on the cyl and the frame. Weapon is excellent mechanically. Has some minor? pitting spots on cylinder. Any help appreciated.. Not equipped to send any pics.. Jack

    i have a s&w 38 special ctg the numbers are as follows
    on the butt of the gun the number is "c 40272"
    on the inside of the gun their is a "6 above a 4 and then under neith that is is 74520" then on the back of the chamber is "c 40272"
    the and sign between the s and w looks kinda like an 8 or just a different looking and sign the gun its self is crome plated with pearl handels

    With the "S" serial number, it sounds like you may have a 38/44 Heavy Duty or Outdoorsman since the "S" serial numbers are on large "N" frame guns.

    Smith 38/44's are worth quite a bit these days. It may be worth several thousand dollars depending on condition and rarity.
