Weathered look vs protecting the metal

OK, my old Winchester model 94 is getting a good cleaning and I'm noticing some *slight* progression of some rust. This is my deer rifle. How do I keep the "weathered" look on the metal, which I like, but still protect my gun from rust damage? I don't want to reblue and have a new looking barrel on a weathered looking stock.

New to refinishing, etc. and looking for some advice.

Oil it often.

You can take 0000 steel wool saturated with gun oil and lightly rub the rusted areas. It should remove the rust and not harm the surrounding blueing. Then oil often.

Don't store the rifle in a gun case! Keep it in a dry place.
