You can get some darn nice artillary for $1,200.
The "custom" part is what's hard.
A true custom rifle, made for you, will cost well over that.
When you look at used custom rifles you might do better on price, but you have a rifle that has been customized for someone else. I've also found it's common, and understandable enough, that when someone has pumped several thousand dollars into a custom rifle, they expect to get it all back and then some, when they sell.
Bottom line? You can get damn near anything if you're willing to pay the price; and, you can get some good deals if you're willing to settle for someone else's idea of the ideal rifle. If you can be patient you might find a decent custom rifle that will fill your needs for less than $2K, but patience would definately be the operative word here.
    Good luck.

And may I add...keep looking for what you want on GunBroker if used will do. I took a chance on a poorly descrided, low starting price Mauser 98 .284 with a small very fuzzy picture for practically nothing, and have been offered a profit of over 1K for it since!

I have been looking into a custom rifle also. Check out Montanarifleman.com, I have been looking into this company. I talked to the guy today and he quoted me $1100 for the complete barreled action with floor plate & trigger guard in stainless steel. I already posted another thread here to try to get some more info on them.quote:Originally posted by Roderick White

This Q is way too open ended, but for ~600 you can get a rebarrel job (including action work) from Hart. And for ~250-400 you can pick a stock. So you to buy a wasted gun with a good action and yeah for ~1200 I think you can have a custom gun with the components you want.

I've been very satisfied with the performance of the 6.5x284 I had built by these folks http://www.sharpshootersupply.com/index.html

It cost a few hundred more than $1200 but I went whole hog figuring this was a once in a lifetime thing for me.

Yes you can if it is a used rifle. I have bought more than one on GB. The chances that you will get what you paid to have a rifle custom made are slim and none.
