30-378 barrel

I bought a sako 995 in 30-378 and I am looking at making it into a long range rifle. I have heard all the "not worth it" quotes on this caliber, but what I am wanting to know is how long of barrel would make give me the most bang for the buck. I have a 300 mag for the closer stuff. I am looking for a 600 yard gun that is to be shot off of a bench or a really good rest. I was thinking like 30 or 32 since I am not really going to pack it hunting, it is going to be strickly for going across a canyon or down into a basin off of a good rest

Personally I wouldn't go any shorter than 30", and would lean toward 36" if I could get it.

32 to 34" would work well, this is really a 1000 yard cartridge so you shouldn't limit yourself to just 600 yards.

    nuclabuyer,

FWIW, I and some others feel this is an overbore caliber. That doesn't meant you shouldn't shoot it. In the case of an overbore rifle, one of the best ways to remedy it would be to put a longer barrel on to help with velocity and full burn of the powder. I would go with a 32" if you wanted to.
