10/22 screw torques

Does anyone know what Ruger recommends for torque values for the bolts that hold the barrel to the receiver? Is there a range? Would it be different for a heavy barrel? How much for the stock screw?
Constants aren?t and variables won?t.

I would imagine 65inlbs.. It is a fairly common torque.

eng tech: suggest you call ruger and ask. I wouldn't use 65 in-lbs on any bolt smaller the 1/4 inch and certainly not on a ruger stock screw in a wood stock that isn't pillared and 1/4 inch or more in diameter.

65in. lbs. is about right for a stock screw. Don't over tighten the screws that hold the barrel, you can break the wedge if you do. I don't know if Ruger will give the specs out.

I have also broken that wedge by over tightening the screws. I would not go any tighter than you can get by using the short end of the Allen wrench with just your fingers. If you have changed the barrel on your 10/22 you might want to check the wedge since you may not have noticed that it is broken.

Called Ruger to order parts this morning and asked about torque specs. Was told only hand tight on the screws [;)]

Ruger sure has a lot of nerve making a statement like that!! Did you actually speak to a technician or some * in sales, or what? [:(!]

An average man using a small handled screwdriver can yield as much torque as 50inlbs. Just using the thumb and first two fingers can yield 10 to 17inlbs. I'm sorry but hand tight is not enough. Heck, I tighten the top halves of my scope rings to 28inlbs(per Leopuold's recommendation)! I would go no less than 40 or 45inlbs atleast.

Why not contact one or more of the makers of after market barrels?

If someone with a 10/22 (I sold mine) will post the screw diameter and threads per inch I will look up the maximum torque value in my Machinist's Handbook. Anything else is just a SWAG.

The problem is not the screws, it's the wedge. It will break if you tighten the screws too much.
