Winchester Super-X Model 1 Misfires

My Winchester Super-X Model 1 generally fails to fire once in every 25 rounds...but it's unpredictable. Periodically, it'll misfire during two consecutive attempts and then it'll go 40-50 rounds without a hitch. Primers on the misfired rounds appear lightly dented and struck slightly off center. When reintroduced to the chamber, they always fire the second time. This malfunction doesn't appear to be linked to the type of ammo--it happens with everything from AAs to premium hunting rounds. Other than the occasional misfire, the gun functions perfectly and is in excellent shape. I've probably fired 1000 rounds through it since I bought it new in 1979. I love this gun and want to get it out of the safe much more this year. However, I hesitate to take it afield due to its unreliability. I missed a floating, dead-away ringneck this season due to a misfire. Drove me nuts!!!

Two different gunsmiths have looked at the gun and neither could find a thing wrong with it. Both did some polishing, deep cleaning, and honing, thinking there might be a burr that's holding up the hammer or firing pin, but nothing helped. I'm ready to buy another complete NOS trigger group, but a friend suggested I first replace the hammer spring. Any thoughts on what could be the problem or what I can do to correct the malfunction?

sounds like a weak hammer spring or a broken firing pin. i have 750,000 rounds thru my sxm1 and never had a problem. do you have the type 1 or 2 trigger group?

is it possible that the bolt isn't quite going into battery (fully closed), just far enought to trip the disconnect but not quite 'home'?. that would give you this effect, check the action spring and magazine tube (the magazine tube is reversable b.t.w.).

Need to dig it out of the safe, but will get back to you ASAP. If I remember correctly, it had the smooth trigger. However, I'll need to lay eyes on it to verify.

reason im curious is if its the type 1, that allen screw may be dragging on the trigger/sear, which might be slowing the 'fall' a bit.

Just checked....smooth trigger. Does that make it a Type-1 with the Allen screw?

smooth is type 2. see if your bolt locking lugs are cracked on top.
