What is this Winchester???

A few days ago I was fortunate enough to find what I thought was a Win. 62 in almost new condition. I bought the gun from a woman who said it belonged to her father who had purchased it as a new gun. Here is my problem, research tells me that a true 62 would have a SN below 93000 & guns above that SN would be a 62A & so marked on the bbl. Also I have found that the SN's stopped at approx. 409467 for the 62A. Here's the good part!?![?]?!? My gun is marked on the bbl. as a mod. 62 and the SN is 5473XX does anyone have any ideas, sure could use some help on this one! Just a thought but 62 barrel on a 62A rifle. ?? I dont think there are any valid records on Winchester 22 pump rifles after 1949 but they were made until 1963.

sounds to me like its an 1890 receiver with a 62 barrel installed. without pictures its hard to say. if the hammer is powered by a leaf spring that should tell the whole story.

I have seen several Winchester Model 62As with serial numbers well above the 90,000 range which have had the "62" barrel marking. Although none of them were numbered as high as yours some were well used and one in particular was in excellent plus condition. All of these rifles, save one, appeared in every aspect as never being fooled with and factory original in every sense. Maybe someone here has Schwing's book handy and can supply you with more specific details.

Thanx to all for the comments. I just had to take this gun apart. It is a flat spring 90 receiver & from the SN it was made in 1915. The bbl. says it's a 62, it has a 62A for-end with a 90 receiver[?][?][?]Any ideas what I might have? This is a really really nice gun, shows minimal wear inside & out. I don't intend to keep it, but what should I call it when I go to trade it off??? And would it have any collector value?

That's the problem with 1890, 1906, 62 model Winchesters. All manor of Frankenstein guns can be slapped together from mixed parts. Good luck.
