Stop into a gun shop today and found a Winchester model 70 featherweight XTR in 280 Rem. with a 3-9 by 40 Nikon scope. MINT condition! Its on consignment and the guy wants $800 firm. Considering buying it. Is it a good buy? I do know that the featherweight in .280 is rare.

    Turbo72,

From a collectors standpoint that would have been a decent buy. That is until Winchester announced it is going to return to U.S. manufacture of the Win 70 lines in North Carolina. I'm not a true collector but I know a lot of people who spent money thinking Winchesters were nothing but going up and bought a little too high...are going to eat their prices a little.

From a hunter/shooter perspective that would be a nice rifle except I could find just as good for less. From a Target shooters perspective that is a really good round to build up a rifle in. A Featherweight doesn't cut it in that arena.

Even though Winchester Mod. 70s are coming back it is still a collectors item now. So if you want it, buy it! I would(well if I had any money left this year), I love my Mod. 70s!

Hey,Turbo, collector or not, that sounds like a great rifle.I've got a .243 and a 7mm mauser in that model and wouldn't part with them for any less. It's a pretty good price considering the glass on it.Go for it,I seriously doubt you'll be sorry.[:)]

Not "rare" enough to justify the price IMHO. Does it come with the box and all associated paperwork? If not, that's a little bargaining room. As a consignment piece, the shop owner and seller have agreed on a price that profits both. If you want it, walk in and lay down $700 cash and see what happens. Unless he really means "firm", cash on the counter has been known to close a deal.
