Where to get wsm action?

HI all, New to the forum, hope this is appropriate question.

I want to build a wildcat 6.5 WSM (270 wsm necked down to .264 cal.). My problem is I cannot find an action to build on. I cannot find anything on Winchester or Remington's web sites on purchasing actions. I know Mauser 98's can be modified but I'm told it's a real pain. Does anyone know of someone who can furnish an action or a barreled action? Anyone convert an m98? Next question: where can I obtain loading info on this caliber and possibly a 6mm/270WSM.
Thanks in advance! Happy shooting!

    Jim the PA Hunter,

Montana Rifleman has everything you need for the WSM actions/barrels:

    http://www.montanarifleman.com/

Most folks that want to use a Remington or a Winchester buy a used rifle and do the rebarrel/conversion.

    Best.

    ADDED:

Midway is listing the Savage WSM actions:

    Savage WSM Actions

They also show a Remington short action with the .223 bolt face. These can be modified by a gunsmith to handle the WSM cartridges.

    Remington short action .223

Lastly, they are listing a CZ with the magnum bolt face but I think it's a long action. You can check on this and CZ would make a terrific hunting rifle.

    CZ Magnum action

I think your best bet will be Montana Rifleman with a dedicated action and box and they make barrels too but the Savage might be fine for your project. We don't know where you want to go with this so it's hard to judge.

    Best.

    Added again:

There are two auctions on Gunbroker for the Remington 673 in 6.5 Rem. Mag. chamber. These could be set back and re-chambered for the 6.5 WSM wildcat. They are relatively inexpensive due to the closeout status.

    Best.

I agree with nononsense. The Montana actions are excellent. I have a CZ 3 I built for a customer a 25 WSM on and it is awsome. The CZ 3 uses Montana Actions and you can pick them up (if you are diligent) at a good price, rebarrel, keep the stock and everything else and you are ready to go. It will save $ in the long run. These CZ 3's were dedicated WSM actions only.

By the way, welcome to GB

Our Wally World has 2 mod 70 Super Shadows in WSM cals( 300 & 270) for less than $400.00 out the door with escort, sell the simmons 3x9, tupperware stock and barrel for what ever and you have a new action at a fair price. Its what I plan to do. very best

    [:)]Thanks for the input!
I pondered the idea of purchasing a new Savage, Winchester, or Remington and stripping everything off down to the action. I can sell the stock and the barrel. Only thing is, how much "custom" work do I want? Will I be satisfied with a plain out of the box factory action or should I have the action trued, lapped, etc. ? If I send the action away to be "blueprinted" and customized, then buy a barrel, I'll have just as much (I think) money in it as if I would have just gone ahead and bought a Montana 1999 barreled action.

If I use a out of the box wally world mod 70 $400 special, sell the barrel and stock for?? I'd guess about $50 bucks each... now I'm down to $300.00 plus another $200.00 for a Shilen CM pre-turned barrel, plus $400 for them to install it (they do the action also). $900 total and I don't have my stock yet.

The Montana's are starting to make sense! Am I missing anything??

The CZ's are nice also, I'll be looking into the CZ#3 action.

BTW: Here are my project thoughts so far. Nice RH bolt repeating action, name brand barrel 6.5 WSM caliber (CM or stainless and fluted, 26 inch with a muzzle brake, 1:8-1/2 twist), laminated wood thumbhole stock. I like to do my own finishing of the stock. A semi-inletted will be fine. I'll glass bed the action and first inch of the barrel, then free float the rest.

Those 673's being auctioned are real nice! Barrel is too short for me.

Believe it or not I'm more of a 6mm Remington fan when it comes to my choice of calibers. I've hit chucks at very long distances and whitetail deer also with the 6mm.
I never liked the 243 Winchester because of its short neck. I reload all my calibers.
I have built a 6mm Rem. On a VZ24 M98 action with a Timney trigger and a Shilen 26 inch sporter contour barrel. I have a Fajen thumbhole varminter stock on it. Local gunsmith did up the action, head spacing, and trigger. I did the rest.

I bought a 264 Winchester Magnum mod. 70 about 20 years ago and use it for whitetail deer. I am very impressed with the performance of the 264 calibers. I also own a 6.5x55 Norwegian Krag and have hit a few chucks with them both a long ranges.

I have always wanted to have a wildcat. I was seriously looking at the 284 Winchester case for a 6.5 x 284 and the 6.5 x 06. When the WSM's came out I noticed the resemblance of the 284 case dimensions, except larger powder capacity. After a little browsing I found postings on the WSM's compared to other cartridges of their same caliber. It appears that high velocities close to, if not surpassing their counterpart magnums, are possible using less powder.

I plan on using this rifle mostly for whitetail deer and maybe on an Antelope, Ram, and/or Mule Deer hunt when I retire. I cannot promise I won't take it on a few chuck hunts too.

Thanks to all the welcome wishes and it's a pleasure to have met you guys!

    Get an action,..

ALWAYS keep a rifle stock if you can afford it.
They will go up in value before you know it. By the way good choice of caliber,.....

I am doing the same cal. I am using a rem 700 7mm mag the bolt face is the same and if you use a VS you will get the H&S stock. Rock makes an awesome barrel the 5R. If you are going to do it don't be cheep on the action part True it and lap the Lugs it's not that high. The long action will allow you to get the bullet out so you can use the case capacity.

At one time Brownels sold them and i think Midway too[?] I still think a whole gun is the way to go and sell off the excess. As I recall the actions alone were about $400.00[:0]
