What is a post-64 M70 Winchester in .222 caliber worth in 95% condition? This one has the plain walnut stock with cut checkering but without the black forend tip. (70A ?) It has factory sling swivels. Thank you.

    The current Blue Book says:

    100%___98%____95%____90%____80%____70%____60%
    $325___$285___$265___$230___$200___$165___$140

the book values are generally a little low, so you might want to go to the auction side and search closed auctions for real world prices.

Thank you for your replies. I am interested in buying this rifle. The owner wants $495, saying that the M70 in .222 in a rare bird. I thought the price was a bit high for an early post 64. Maybe I'm wrong, that's why I posted the question here. I have been unable to find one for sale or recently sold on any of the auction sites. I did see one advertised for sale at a high end gun dealer's listing for over $500. I would appreciate any additional comments on the value of this rifle. Does anyone have numbers on total production of the .222 in Model 70's? Thank you.

IMHO that is way too much money for a post 64 Model 70. The .222 was available in several models, as was the .223.

Thanks for any replies. I passed on the rifle I was considering and bought a Rem 700 classic in .220 Swift instead.

Good choice! You'll like the Swift. Why waltz when you can rock 'n roll?

    TWalker,

I know this is late to your post but I used to have a .222 Winchester heavy barrel. I bought it for $350.00 sold it for $400.00 and went looking for another one and watched the bidding top $750.00. I haven't looked for one since I got my Savage 12FV in .223. Even the post '64's seem to be selling somewhat high for unusual calibers.

Oh, forgot to mention. It was THE MOST ACCURATE RIFLE I HAVE EVER OWNED. I shot one five shot group of .013 and two three shot groups of .018 and .019 with it. The first was shot on a balmy -8 deg day up at the shooting range West of Helena MT. with zero wind and the other two were shot at -10 deg under the same conditions a few weeks later. Buying one used of course will be a matter of luck in how the barrel was treated. The previous owner of mine took very good care of it. I sold it when I needed money after I got out of A&P school. HUGE mistake.

Even though I bought the Swift, I'm still watching the .222 Winchester. If I can ever get the price down to $350 or trade a gun I don't have much invested in, it still may end up in my gunroom. The last .222 I owned was a Rem 721 I believe, and it was a great shooter.
