I got a Magellan 500LE and the MapSend Topographical software for Christmas. I'm having trouble downloading the maps from the computer to the GPS unit. Can anyone give me some guidance? The computer says it can't locate the GPS unit even though it is connected through the USB port. I have tried everything I can think of but nothing is working.

When you set up your handheld to communicate with the computer, which sort of data transfer utility are you using?
Some software needs an NMEA output, and some like the ASCII; you need to read the software compatibility specs to find out which.

First be sure you installed all the software it came with if so you might want to check and make sure your computer is detecting it in the USB port.
Pull up "Device Manager" which in windows xp you can find by pulling up my computer then going to System info located in the top left box and clicking hardware. Look under USB and make sure you computer say's it is plugged in. if not try another usb port, or try restarting your computer while it is plugged in. lastly you can uninstall the program and then reinstall it, sometimes something gets missed in the install.

Hopefully that helps computers somtimes have a mind of there own.

First thing, go to the "system" setup on your Magellan and look for options as to which interconnection format it wants to default to.
Check the maps software to see if it is compatible with that format.
Once the 2 are the same format; VIOLA! Should be no more problems.

One other thing you should check: try a USB port on the back of the computer; the port in the front sometimes causes problems.

I had same problem as was trying to download to GPS with SD card in place. I had to buy a card reader writer; about 25.00 at wal- mart, and then download to card there. You cannot download the map info to the unit with out a SD card as it takes over a gigabite card to hold the whole US. Hope this is helpful.
