"stripping" the inside of barrel?

...a gun question. I was given an old, old 12 guage by my father, and I was headed to the gun store anyway so I took it along to have the smith look at it. He said there were a few spots of rust inside the barrel, and not to fire it or I'd "strip" the barrel. Not familiar with this term. I thought I could clean the barrel out real good and maybe buff it a bit and then use the gun. Any ideas?

Reposted here for the benefit a newby. I've never heard of the term either.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

Hello Chtistian Warrior and Henry O I think your guy that used that term on a shotgun with slight rust in bore was a BULLSMITH not gun smith. use a bore mop in 12 gage with Kroil let set 24 hours then use some steel wool on a bore brush. and enjoy your old gun as long as it does not have TWIST STEEL / DAMASCUS barrel my $.02

Perhaps it is a damascus and he meant unwind onto "strips". If you look at damascus barrels that have "catostrophicaly failed" they do sort of look unwound into strips.

+1 on OLD FOOL. A term we may not be familiar with may be the talk in some far off place.
