Can a civilian AR-15 type lower receiver be converted to shoot full auto or do you need an M-16 lower. I have seen the parts for sale every now and then and always wondered if it can be done. I know it is NOT LEGAL - but its nice to dream.

Hello you can legally buy the parts to convert AUTO SEAR if you have early AR and big bucks the auto sear has the registered number with BATF all you need is the back ground check a class 3 dealer and BIG bucks.

The simple answer is "no"; you cannot drop the fire control parts of an M16 into an AR-15 receiver & make it fire full auto.

Prior to the ban on manufacturing full autos, there were several machine shops that altered AR-15 receivers to make them into registered full autos. Fortunately, anyone smart enough to be a journeyman machinist is smart enough not to perform such a conversion today.

Yes, you can do it without re- machining the lower, BUT I'm not telling you how. You already said you know it's not legal, so why not dream abour Tarpon fishing in Florida instead? When a Judge says "10 years and $10,000" after the ATF took your house or car, wherever they find the gun, Tarpon fishing sounds better

There are several ways to do it. You can use M16 parts with a drop in Auto Sear, You can use M16 parts and drill the appropriate hole in the stock for the M16 auto sear, or you can use a contraption called a "Lightning Link". All methods are highly illegal if you don't have proper authorization from BATFE.

My preferred method of obtaining rapid fire legally is by Bump Firing.[:D]

Bump firing is keeping your trigger finger stationary and using your grip on the forarm to pull the rifle into your trigger finger. The recoil and continued forward pressure on the rifle produces full auto results with a semi auto gun. It is easier to do with lighter rifles like an M4 configuration. It is legal because there is only one bullet fired for each pull of the trigger.

Bigtire.......... I think the military auto sears are mounted in the lower receiver ..... not in the "stock".

My understanding is that you can not even have an auto sear in your possesion (not installed) and own an AR15 without the proper class 3 stamp. Anyone, is that correct?

Just be sure not to use the highly complicated contraption that ATF has classified as illegal.

As I recall it was a 16 inch shoestring.

I may be wrong on the 16 inches.
    Mis-remembering shoestring and barrel length.

I may be wrong on the shoestring.
Since that is my budget, it may be clouding the issue.

Now that's a question.... what if it WAS a SHOESTRING, use a bootlace.

Yeah, we may have something here with that bootlace gig !!!
I think what we'd have is that 10 years ?
