Bipod Suggestions

I'm looking for a bipod for a rifle I just purchased, a Savage 12FV in .308

The two main contenders seem to be the Harris and the Versa-Pod.

Harris: Mounts to sling swivel, but doesn't pivot (fixed)
Versa-Pod: Mounts to barrel (!!!), but legs and body pivot

If anyone has an opinion/experience, I'd appreciate it. I like the pivoting feature on the Versa-Pod, but the "Universal Mount" scares me. I don't like the idea of mounting anything directly on a free-floating barrel. Seems like a good way to ruin the accuracy.

But maybe I'm wrong...fill me in! [:D]

By the looks of the rifle you bought it for long range type shooting.
In the DVD Secrets of Precision Long Range Shooting by the American Gunsmithing Institute (AGI) www.americangunsmith.com they talk about the Harris bipod and I think it does swivel, they recommend it highly. I agree with you that a bipod mounted on the barrel could hurt accuracy.

    Hope this helps,

DO NOT mount it on bbl and expect repwatable accuracy.
Harris does make models that tilt, and that is the one you should buy for field shooting

The Versa Pod that I used had a base that clamped to the sling swivel stud on the foreend and a forward spigot that the bipod proper attached to. NO contact with the barrel. I liked that it was easy to get on and off but did not like that its cant by rocking on the spigot had no brake... it could just flop. So I bought a Harris with tilt but with a friction clamp to keep it from moving unless you move it on purpose.

Versa Pod says their 50- series rests have friction locks. I would be seriously interested in that.

I use the S series Harris BiPod that does swivel. It has a nut that you can lock down for the correct angle that you want. I also purchased a KMW pod-loc. It is a MilSpec locking arm that replaces the BiPod nut and allows for quick adjustment and moves up out of the way when not needed. I got it thorugh Brownells. This is the most solid setup that I have used.

I am a harris fan too, I have 4. Like the others have said the "S" series swivle. Again DO NOT mount ANY thing to a bbl not just bipods. I am not a fan of swivling bipods but that is just me. I did pick up a new rifle that had a versa-pod on it. I have not go to shoot with it on yet but it seems like a very nice set up. What I like about the Versa-pod is how easy it is to move between guns. You put a Versa mount on the guns you want to use it on and it takes about 2 seconds to move it between firearms. I think in the future I will be getting another Versa or two, and a bunch of mounts.

I swap my Harris between a couple rifles, it takes a little longer than 2 sec., about 10sec.[:D] No mounts to buy, you just need a sling swivel which most guns already have.[;)] Rock solid bipods.
