Savage 12BVSS/ABolt 22-250 Questions

Yesterday, I purchased 3 rifles from an individual. A Kimber 84M Longmaster VT in 22-250, A Savage 12BVSS in 300 WSM and a Browning ABolt II Composite Stalker in 22-250. I have two questions.

The last 2-2 1/2" of the end of the barrel is fatter and is ported. Does Savage offer factory porting or do the members here think it would be an after-market job? It looks extremely professional. I am sure it would be to reduce recoil, but at 10 lbs plus, it shouldn't kick that much.

Second questions is on the ABolt? I'm sure there are several out there, but I have never seen a 22-250 with the BOSS. Does anyone know if these were special orders?

I really wasn't interested in the Savage, but it was a package deal. I don't know who or why someone would use a heavy barrel 300 WSM. I am sure I will try to move it, but I'm gonna have to shoot it a few times just to see how it shoots.

    neacp,

The Browning A-Bolt Varmint in 22-250 was sold with the BOSS installed from the factory as a standard offering.

The muzzle brake on the Savage 12BVSS in 300 WSM was installed after the fact and is used to control muzzle rise as well as recoil so that the shooter can get on target faster for a second or following shot. The folks that shoot long range, whether hunting or target, often equip rifles such as this with muzzle brakes for that very reason.

    Best.

I have a Savage 12BVSS in 300 WSM and the cartridge does have a little kick to it, even in that heavy rifle. Nice rifle and I'd like to shoot it more often, so I've been considering a MB for the thing. Savage doesn't offer the option unfortunately and I can't bring myself to pay the $200.00 my gunsmith charges, hardware included. I didn't mind on the Weatherby he did, but seems to me the cost should be a touch lower on the Savage.
