I just bought a 10/22 plain jane variety.

I didn't learn as much as I could first though.

What are the differences between the "carbine" and the "rifle"? Is the barrel length and stock the same?

Congratulations, you have purchased one of the most versatile .22 self loading rifles available. Lots of add on stuff available. I suggest you go to the official Ruger web site where you can see all of the 10/22 models offered and read the description of each model. There is also a forum dedicated to Ruger firearms with a section on rimfire rifles. Welcome to the forum

Usually "carbine" means a shorter barrel

The Ruger carbine has a 18 1/2" Bbl. where the rifle has a 20" Bbl. with Fiber Optic sights and no barrel-band The Stock on the rifle is slimmer with a bit longer of pull. Some of the early Rifles came with standard sights; not fiber optics. VGUN1

Is the price basically the same? I feel this rifle is short for me. For a 22, the shorter barrel shouldn't be an accuracy factor should it?

If you want to have some fun, go over to Fleabay and under search, type in "10/22" and then limit the search to "Sporting Goods" and limit it again to "Hunting."

You'll see more options than you know what to do with. I've totally customized my 10/22, and haven't spent anything close to a fortune doing so.

You'll also hear a lot of people tell you what a crappy gun it is. I happen to disagree -- I love the 10/22 (and to annoy more people, I love the Mini-14, too).

    Congratulations on your purchase!

    hildy,
As to your question about accuracy; no, the shorter barrel should be no less accurate. .22's typically attain maximum velocity in about 16" of barrel, so you should lose nothing there either. This assumes a scope. If you stay with the iron sights the longer barrel would have a theoretical edge with the longer sighting radius, but few of us would be able to prove the point.
As to the ton of after market add-ons available, my only word of advice would be to shoot your new rifle lots and add to it where you really feel a need, but not because it's supposed to be better. My 10-22 is all original, except for an overtravel stop screw I put in the trigger. It like to keep 5 rounds of W-W Power Points in well under an inch at 100 yards. I'm not about to fiddle with this one much at all.
    Good luck. Have fun.

    Hildy,
You just bought one really fine utility .22 rifle. In my humble opinion, there isn't a better .22 out there for the same $$. Enjoy.
