Well here goes - I hope the pictures go through. My questions are: 1)Can anyone tell how many of the U.S. Marked Carbines were Issued. 2)How many are known to exist
3)Potential Value (For Insurance)

I have posted these questions are several other gun forums and usually receive the following
1) They never made any
2) You have a cut down rifle version
3) We can tell you nothing without photos (I don't blame them on that) Thanks GB

This is a very tough question to answer.

Yes, there were some "U.S." marked Model 1895 Carbines. There is no known source of information that definitively lists or discusses them, or how many were made. I can tell you that responses (1) and (2) that you received on the other forums are hogwash.

It would help me to know what the serial number on your Carbine is. I suspect that it is likely to be <20,000.

    Yes, the pictures were fine.

This is the information that I have in my references, and my interpretation of it.

Winchester in the year 1898 (serial numbers in the 7,800 - 20,000 range) was awarded a contract to provide the U.S. Army with 10,000 Model 1895 Muskets. Of that number, only 100 of them saw actual combat use (in the Philippine Islands). After unfavorable reports, they were returned to the U.S. and later sold as surplus. The remaining 9,900 guns were alledgedly sold as surplus, with the bulk sold to Cuba in 1906. It is my belief that some of them were reworked by Winchester and converted to Carbines. The serial number on your Carbine fits right into the 10,000 U.S. Army contract guns. I highly recommed that you contact the Cody Firearms Museum and purchase a factory letter for your Carbine... who knows, it may provide the answers you seek - http://www.bbhc.org/firearms/records.cfm
