Can someone tell me the model number of a smith revolver I have been looking at, its a 38 special, and that is printed on the right side of the barrel, on the left side its marked smith and wesson. and the serial number inside the yoke is 74XXX, on the bottom of the handle frame, under the wood grips, is a K then some spaces, then the number 287XXX. it has about 95 percent bluing, and the barrel looks to be about six inches. the grips ar ethe old diamond S&W grips. If I can get the model number, then maybe i can get a indiciation of value to offer. thanks, dave

If it has fixed sights it is likely a model 10. If has adjustable sights it may be a model 15. I believe the serial number given would date the gun prior to use of model numbers by S & W. In those days a model 10 was called a Military and Police and the model 15 was a Combat Masterpiece or with a 6" bbl it was called a K-38.

The rear sight has been removed, and a leupold scope with bueler mounts put on. If its a model ten or fifteen, can anyone give a value?

The number inside the yoke ia an assembly number, not a serial number. Your revolver is a .38 Military and Police Second Model (Model of 1902).
It was originally equiped with hard rebber grips and the six inch barrel was a factory standard feature. This is from "The Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson".

    Value is about $300

    Good luck

The "K" s/n prefix dates the revolver to 1956. The 6 inch barrel would indicate it is a pre-Model 14, which was called the: K-38 Target Masterpiece. Value in my part of the country, in top condition, would be $400 +/-. Considering the sight has been removed and a scope installed, even though it is a Leupold you would be hard pressed to get more than another $50 for the piece as it is now.
