I recently bought a SM Ace w/ a 70B prefix ser# no box. Did Colt make any of these in 1981 with a prefix other than SM? Is there a list on this anywhere?

I have an ACE with SN prefix 70B bought new by me.
I have also read report of .45s with SN prefix SM.
Looks to me like the assemblers at Colt were not real careful about which upper they put on a frame off the rack.

Would Colt be able to tell me if my 70B prefix gun left the factory as a Service Mdl. Ace?

Colt indeed made a post war Ace with 70B sufix. They also made around 3,000 series 70 .45 with SM prefix. My guess is both the Ace and the 70 prefix were assembled at the end of the 70 series run. With Colt being notorous for using up all parts, they were more intrested in complete guns.

Called Colt today & my pstol was made late 1982 with .22s,45s&38supers being produced in my ser#range. A Colt letter is $100 for a definative certificate. I paid $800 for it in 99%.
