80 [:p][:p][:p]Hello sorry about the pun I could not resist. in the late 1980's colt had just about priced themself out of the pistol business with the change to the much hated series 80 added safety and the fact that many good 1911Type Clones were coming on the market at a much cheaper price. . so they decided to make a plain Jane matt finish full size 45Acp pistol Thus the model 1991.

    cubslover,

I was working on some pistol notes anyway:

    1991 vs. 1911

For those wondering what the difference is between these pistols, the fact is there really is none. Back in 1991 Colt decided to market an economy version of their basic Series 80 Government Model. The polished blue was changed to an all-matte parkerized (later blue) finish, checkered rubber grip panels were used, and the serial number sequence was made similar to US military M1911A1 pistols. The resulting pistol was cleverly named "M1991A1", after the year of introduction. Mechanically however they are the same as any other Colt Series 80, 1911-type pistol.

    Some comparative history:

    Mine had a plastic trigger.
Not sure if that is a difference, but no other 1911 I have/had, has one.
    Shot great.

Does the 1991 still have the 80 series additional safety?

The 1991 I worked on CHANGED OUT THE PLASTIC parts did have the $#%^& series 80 safety parts but who knows with colt if all had this "feature" I do know Colt as of late has produced some series 70 type pistols and also a remake of the military 1911 these do not have series 80 stuff. I was able to stock up on series 70's the first time around to build match pistols on They were IMHO the best base to build match guns on until Caspian came along. You can always remove series 80 safety parts Brownells has the kit but you may then have legal problems in case of an A.D. with anyone sHooting this pistol. "PRAISE THE HARD-BALL GUN"

I have an early 1911A1 Compact model. It has a metal trigger. The main difference between it and the 1911's was a horrible finish and lots more machine marks.

On the plus side, it is quite accurate.

I understand the later models of the 1991 series had the plastic trigger and the accuracy was less than stellar.
