I'm thinking of adding an AK-47 to my collection. But with so many to choose from, where is a good place to start? Looking for a good reliable one, no "cheap" stuff. What's your thoughts? Thanks.

Any & all. From $225 to $5,000+ for Tiger SVD's

From parts guns to milled Polytechs, they all run & work the same.

I prefer Polytech's & Norinco's, they are orginal OEM guns with chrome bores & bolts.

Parts guns & Arsenal's rebuilds are parts guns.
Dont care for parts guns, even if I build them.
But never found or built one that would not run.
Even with 3/16" of headspace, they keep cookn.

How much you want to spend is the real question. Ak's can be had for $275 up to $1k+.

If you have the money get yourself a top of the line Krebs Custom
    http://www.krebscustom.com
    or a Arsenal
    http://www.arsenalinc.com/about.htm

If not, most of us have had good luck with Wasr10's, Sar1's, Mak90's, etc. You can also find SLR95's used at gun show's for around $400.

There are some better and some worse but most would agree that the Romainian WASR 10 is probably the best bang for your buck. Your looking at around 300 for one. I have one and its great

I bought Norinco when they were cheap. We have one that is the one dedicated to 'rapid fire / repeated fire / etc'. That one has been really 'cooked' by two sons, a few nephews, then friends, and still no failures of any kind. Most any AK's SHOULD do that anyway though. The blue finish of the Norinco's (at least older ones)is better than some of the crap running around today.

However, last month I was able to shoot a Romainian that now has the mag well opened up for double stack mags. The mag well opening up was a really crappy job, had sharp edges, etc....BUT it fired 'pie plate' groups at 75 - 100 yds. There was no failure to fire or function with a wide variety of ammo .

If that was the only thing I could afford, I would go for one. I didn't like some things about it, but it did what an AK is supposed to do. Ah, you did use the 'collection' word...so you'll be buying another one soon...you can get another flavor then !

Just buy with caution from someone that's reputable, and then ENJOY !
