Legal question..

I am not sure this is the correct forum, but will post and let moderators decide.

I have a couple M1 Garands I want to sell. In my state of residence, as a private citizen you can put an ad in the paper and sell a rifle or pistol to a neighbor or friend..or to be honest most anyone who shows up at your door, but most of the people I know who have sold a hunting rifle or pistol get an ID from them and address just to cover themselves. Not sure what that covers, but they feel it may discourage any illegal activity with the firearm..who knows?
My question is: If I sold this to someone out of state what is the process and what kind of paper/license do I have to have and what does the buyer have to have to make things legal?
I am thinking of doing an internet ad and want things to be legal and above board. Thanks for any information

Your buyer must find an FFL Dealer in his state then you send him (The FFL Dealer) the gun and they will do the paper work.

That's it? How do I know the person I send it to, has an FFL? Is there a means of verifying it? Do I need to verify it? Thanks.
I apologize for my ignorance in this, as it is all new to me. Again, thanks for your patience.

Some FFLs will not accept guns from a private individual, it is legal for them to do so, they just will not. Having said that, what you do is have the purchaser go to his local FFL dealer and have the dealer send you a certified copy of his FFL. You can check it on the ATF web site if you are unsure of its legitimacy. Then you can mail the rifle to the FFL (after you get the money!!) and list them as the buyer. It is then up to the dealer to "sell" it to the buyer. You can also sell them (since they are over 50 years old) to an FFL (C&R) holder. In that case they send you the money and a certified copy of their FFL and you ship the rifle directly to them.

    Good Luck

YES HERE IS A WAY TO VERIFY A FFL, GO TO ATF.GOV AND FIND "EZ CHECK" PUNCH IN THE NUMBERS OFF THE LICENCE THAT WAS SENT TO YOU AND THEY WILL VERIFY THE SHIPPING ADDRESS. BTW THIS IS THE BEST PLACE TO SELL YOUR RIFLES, JUST GO TO THE AUCTION SIDE AND OPEN "FOR SELLERS"
