Can anybody tell me anything about this rifle. The markings on it state M98 and it is stamped "England". I have been trying to find information on it but am having a hard time doing it. I receintly found out that it is not 8mm but 30-06. Thanks

The British gun trade, like the Americans, were always looking for a source of actions or barreled actions to use for 'custom' rifles. Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Spain and Belgium firearms industries all help out by supplying Mauser and Mauser-style actions/barreled action to these markets.
Trying to I.D. all of the variations is difficult. The Brits and Americans practiced "private labeling" even back then (50's/60's) by putting names such as Whitworth, Parker-Hale, Griffin & Howe, Herters, etc. on the actions that were used for production. So we have to dig a lot deeper, looking for the small details that might help us identify the maker and the seller. This usually starts by taking the barreled action out of the stock, removing the scope and mounts then going over the whole rifle a bit at a time.
These are the places to look and take notes:
Sides of the rear tang.
Under the bolt handle.
Top/left/right of the front ring.
Left side of the action on the rail between the two rings.
Bottom of the action behind the recoil lug.
Bottom of the barrel itself and then all around the entire barrel.
It can be a tremendous help if you can take a couple of high quality overall and several detail photographs of the rifle.
Best.
