Question: S & W M29 Alaska Commemorative

I was able to pick up an S & W Model 29 Alaska 25th Anniversary Commemorative for a great price. The problem I'm having is even after searching the net I cannot find any real info on the gun. I do know it is "1 of 300" and it was produced in 1984-ish. Where else can I look to find out some history of the gun?

S&W only produced a small number of "commemorative" pistols; yours isn't one of them.

What you own is a "special edition". It is one of a group special ordered by a single customer, probably a distributor or state organization. It may have been customized by S&W or someone else. If it doesn't have the original box with a label that has more details, you will have a difficult time finding more information.

At least you got it for a great price; special editions generally sell for less than the "plain" version of a gun in the same condition.

    Per Std. Catalog of S&W:

    1.) The Model does exist.

    2.) Only 200 were made

Contact S&W for a letter that will confirm date of mfg., shipping, qty. made, etc. These letters run $35 and are a good investment for "collectable" pieces.

This is from Standard Catalog ofr Smith & Wesson.
What else did you want to know about it?

Thanks CM and JRK. That is good info to have. I'll be getting ahold of S&W to get that letter.

Forgive me for asking another question but I have never owned a gun such as this. Since only 200 were produced would that make this a "collectable" piece?

I'd consider this revolver to be "collectable". And, interest should be higher in Alaska.

As to added value? I'd venture 15-20+ percent. If you ever decide to sell get the current value from the most recent Blue Book, and also check actual sales on internet sites, for a standard model then add in whatever percentage your comfortable with. Remember, in a sales negotation (haggle) you can always lower the price, but raising it is essentially impossible.

Thanks CM. The sell advise appears sound. My plan is to keep it in it's unfired condition, presentation case and with the S & W letter I'll get. Unfortunatley, we never know what our future holds.
