I am new to the 1911 scene so i would like to here some of your opinions. I think i've narrowed my search down to the taurus pt1911 and the springfield gi. Budget played a big factor. I want to stay in the 500- 600's range. What would you guys pick between those two and are there any other options?

Springfield all the way. Much better built.

Get the Springfield...you can always build it up later on once you get more cash flow. I never had a problem with Taurus revolvers but I am leary of a loaded 1911 for $600. Could be wrong, I've never shot it. But, I do have two Springfields and love'em.

Go with the Taurus. I bought one several weeks ago and have been impressed by it. It comes with all the bells and whistles. It have been 100% reliable with all of my assorted reloads. I own a Springfield and the Taurus is a much better buy.

Just my $.02 The Taurus. has not been in production long enough to establish a track record . It has all the bells and whistles that is the fad in 1911 type pistols these days and that is great for some types of shooting but these same bells and whistles make them illegal for CMP/DCM type matches. I would not be surprised if the frames were made in the same plant on the same machinery as the spring field...The springfield is a proven pistol with a very good track record. I think either one is a better choice then some of the 1911 Clones that are on the market. "PRAISE THE HARD-BALL GUN"

    Taurus PT1911 is nice.
    Damm nice for the money.
And I am a Colt Gold Cup & Springfield Ultra Thorphy Match owner.
One guy in the shop bought 3, got to manhandle it.
    I was impressed.

I would suggest you also look for a Kimber Custom which might be in that price range. It has most of the options and will prove to be quite accurate and reliable. I would pick Kimber over either the springfield or Taurus unless you are buying one of the better grade Springfields.

I carry a Springfield 1911-A1 w/ Novak Night sights every day and love it. Have seen the Taurus, and own a Taurus .45 revolver, the bells & whistles stuff is nice but not was well executed as a 1911 that really costs $2100.! Like the Heinie sights better if they were night sights. That would be the clencher for me.
