I just was given some guns from my mother-in-law and would like an idea of their value. They are: 1) remington mod 788 in.222 w scope in excellent condition Ser#043598. 2)marlin.22 mag lever action mod#57M, can't find serial no. anywhere on gun. 3)revelation .410 bolt action shotgun I believe sold through Western Auto mod#R330B ser#307642 40 Hi-standard 6" sentinal pistol Mod#R-101 chrome w/ white grips ser#920054. Sorry for the long post. Even though these were given to me I would like to give her some money for them but I don't really have idea of value. Any help would really be appreciated.

The 788 is the only one i can comment on with any certainty. It is worthless and you should ship it to me Immediatly.! Actually a gun in that condition and caliber should bring 4 to 500 dollars if sold here, Far less on any kind of trade. There is a small but loyal band of 788 lovers out there and i am one of them. The High Standard is worth a bunch but one of the other guys will have to help you there.

Welcome to the forum. None of the guns are very expensive but value still depends on percentage of original finish present . Without a very complete description of the condition of each or some very good photos, all you will get here is a very broad range of values. What is the make and power of the scope on the model. It may be as valuable as the rifle. With all due respect I must disagree with B17-P51. The blue book lists the High Standard R101 in nickle finish as worth $200 in 100% original condition. I believe he B17-P51 is thinking of the fine High Standard semi-auto target pistols.

Hershel--- Thank you, I stand humbly corrected on the High Standard. But must stand firm on the 788. I know it sounds crazy that an ugly SOB of a rifle that sold for 150.00 and was over priced at that could command such a premium, but they do. Check e'm out, here and in GUN LIST (Gun Digest now). These rifles are real tack drivers and often outshoot 700's. .308 is the most common caliber seen and 44 mag is pretty rare. 30-30s are scarce too.

B17-P51, I stand corrected on the value of the 788. I was unaware that the 788 had such a following. It must be the most valuable of the lot.

Thank you for your input. I don't believe the scopes are anything special, but then I'm certainly not knowledgable in this area. The scopes are 1) Universal 3x9x32 &2)Commercial Post Scope Chief #2. I might add that all 4 guns are in excellent condition and were in my deceased father-in-laws possesion for the past 35-40 years. Thanks again for all your input. Very nice forum.[^]

RE, #2. Prior to the change in the federal firearms laws in 1968, there wasn't a legal requirement for long guns to have a serial number.

The 57 M might also have a substantial value to a Collector of Marlin longguns, i.e. more then a standard Levermatic. Doubt that many were ever made. Don't recall ever seeing a Levermatic in .22 Mag. One that was factory original, in excellent condition, would be worth a preimium.
