Are they not as adjustable as the old ones. Played with one today that would not go under 4 1/2 lbs even with the trigger weight of pull spring completely removed. Is there a kit availble to change out trigger and sear springs to make it much nicer?

It is easier to get forgiveness than permission.

How can the greatest trigger mechanism, as we have been told since 1935, be replaced by a better one in 2008. Any opinions out there?

The greatest 'stock' trigger up to that point. Savage had a nice trigger then along came the "Accutrigger". Before the '70's there wasn't much on the aftermarket table for triggers. Now, there's two dozen flavors and they're all good.

So, it's new and improved to the point we can make it today where we couldn't as of yesteryear. That's why it's better now.

Reason: Better steel, better quality control of the steel and way better machining techniques and tolerances. Being able to design on a computer that is capable of showing physical forces helps too.
