Pre 64 Winchester Model 70

Looking at a .375 Pre 64 on the auction side and the barrel does not appear to have been crowned.

Take a look and see if I am missing something.

I am looking at a used Winchester Model 70. The seller says he bought it "sometime in the 60s." The price is no bargain if it is a post 64 model; but priced low for a pre 64 model. When I go to look at it, how do I know quickly whether or not it is pre or post 64?

Not all Winchesters came with a "curved" crown. I have a 300H&H that has a medium weight bbl that looks the same. (1948)

The crown (or lack of it), looks similar to my 30-06 which is an early production (medium weight bbl)rifle with a 4 digit serial number. Other things that stand out are the floor plate magazine cover catch which was not beveled in first year production rifles. Although I see no pictures of the rear bridge, the description says that it is drilled on top. That may be a slight downgrade in a pre-war rifle to many collectors.

Per Roger Rule's book "The Rifleman's Rifle" (page 153), the early .375 H&H barrels were medium heavy, 24", and "its muzzle was flat, not crowned." The two plugged screw holes in front of the rear sight are also correct, since this barrel was copied from the target barrel of the model 54.
