1903 A3 Remington

I've owned this rifle for about twenty years, and just now got to thinking about seriously shooting it again. It kicks like a mule. Can the recoil be lessened by changing bullet weight/powder? I'd like to use it for varmint type shooting, and am just about burnt out on the recoil. I know a reloader can cook up just about any combination of bullet/powder, but can this recoil really be dealt with? Would just like to tone it down. Thanks.

Remington makes a Rem. Managed Recoil 125gr PSP Corelokt, 2660 fps.

    http://www.remington.com/

When there, go to "Products" and select "Ammunition" and "Ballistics" on the drop-down menu....they also have a page on the tech specs.

Short answer Yes Recoil with the same weight rifle "YOUR 1903 A3 is a direct function of how heavy and how fast your bullet leaves the barrel. Frog bert has the right idea if you don't reload. If you do reload Look at some of the lyman loads for lead loads. MY other suggestion is get a slip on Pad like one made by LIMBSAVER. sold by "midway" and others .

[:D] You might consider a semi-pistol grip stock for that thing. They REALLY tame the recoil, and are cheaper than the C stocks, which are also recoil-tamers.

If you do reload,I load only 44.5 grains of IMR 4064 behind 168gr sierra matchking .020 off lands. It prints 3" groups @ 200 yd. My son age 7 1/2,and my daughter age 10 shoot it and they only weigh 60 pounds,so it is very manageable recoil even with that steel buttplate.

Have your friend load down a bit - the 168s or even 147 FMJs will work fine for a start. You might want to slip on a recoil pad also.

You can load the 30.06 down to 30-30 levels easily but keep in mind that the sights will have to be adjusted to regulate with the slower loads. Not to much trouble with the rear peep sight, but something to consider.
There are reduced loads listed on the Hodgdon Powder website, and some listed in the Speer Reloading Manual that duplicate 30-30 loads.
Good advice on the slip on pads. The limbsaver pad is excellent.
    Good Luck.............[^].
