I'm selling this old Horse Pistol and can't identify the country of origin. The auction shows close up pics of the proofs.

Thanks

It appears to be virtually identical to a Austrian precussion horse pistol, that I have a picture of, in one of my references.

"852" would probably be date of manufacture, i.e. 1852. This was common practice in both Italy & Austria. Deleteing the first diget of the date.

I would say your pistol was made a bit earlier than 1852. It was definately converted from flintlock to percussion perhaps in 1852. I do not recognize any of the proof marks or hallmarks, but the brass nose cap\barrel retainer was very commonly used by the French gunsmiths during the Nepoleanic wars.

Outstanding photos BigTire, would that more sellers were so thorough.

Thanks, I finally broke down and got a Nikon Digital SLR. With a close up lense set it takes great pictures of proofmarks and such.
