Reblueing always has a negative effect on any collectable firearm. Better to leave it in original "ratty" condition, then have a commercial high polish blue job inflicted on it.

Restoration is something else, again. In many cases if it's done by a pro, it will enhance, the value, of some basket case POS.

    Hello dpmule,

Very much so. You will be spending good money to be making your Ithaca worth less.

BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 'REBLUING' AND "RESTORING", BOTH IN QUALITY AND PRICE. A QUALITY RESORATION WILL ADD VALUE (BUT MAYBE NOT ENOUGHT TO COVER THE COST).

You have to weigh the pros and cons. if your gun is pitted and horrible looking then yes rebluing it will bring the value down but it will be higher than if the gun was rusted. Know what I mean, so you have to determine how bad of shape, what its worth etc.

    Do you really care ?

I had a long description of the 45 year history of something I had finally re-stocked and re-blued (finally). Yes, it was an old gun, flat plum, that required 40+ years of care by me.. I replaced the furniture and finished with hand rubbed oil, and had the rest re-blued by an older fellow that does good work. I told him it was a 'family heirloom' not a 'collectable'. He said he could give me a "deep rich blue", but that it would "take time".
I picked it up last Friday...I'm glad I read this post.

    It's not a re-blue, it's been restored.

If you're gonna keep it, do what you want. ENJOY

Restoration versus reblue only affects firearms that are in great demand by collectors, i.e. have substantial intrinsic value. On the other hand, if you have an old double made by Crescent or Stevens, doesn't mean squat, what you do it.

thanks guys, I'm interested in this flues (12ga 34" single barrel trap), but was/am unsure of making the investment if it has indeed been redone, although it is a nice job, the gun appears in good shape, wish I had one in original state close by to compare it to.
