I just picked up a 1892 takedown in 44 WCF. I has a Tange Site and TWO barrels One with a rear site and the other has no rear site. How rare is this? the gun was made in 1910 by the SR #5455XX The gun is good shape not beat up but not perfect either. Let me know Thanks Jon

    I recently came across a Winchester Model 1892 in 44-40. I believe it is the take down version as there was a latch on the end of the mag tube dated 1893. Ont the receiver there are a few words that appear to be factory engraved. Any information on this gun and the price range as to what it might be worth would be great. I understand without seeing it or pictures it makes it difficult.
    Thanks. Please e-mail clinthecker@hotmail.com

    Hello Jon,

    Serial 545,5xx was not manufactured in 1910 (it is likely to be several years later).

    Factory two barrel Takedown sets are extremely rare, and most of them are not chambered for the same caliber. I assume (because you did not state otherwise), that you were implying that both barrel assemblies are 44 W.C.F.[?] Until I know a bit more about your Model 1892, I very highly doubt at this point that it is an authentic two-barrel set. We can start by answering the follwing questions;

    Are both barrel assemblies chambered for the 44 W.C.F. cartridge?

    What is the exact length of each barrel?

    Do both barrels have identical address, caliber, and proof marking stamps?

    Does the forend stock wood on each barrel assembly very closely match?

    The best way for me to evaluate exactly what you have (and possibly aunthenticate it), is for you to post pictures of it (or send them to me).

    Hello Jon,

    That is important (and very interesting) information. The smooth bore barrel is very intriguing.

    Are both barrel assemblies serial numbered to the receiver (look under the forend stock if it is not clearly stamped on the takedown ring assembly)?

    I will look forward to seeing the pictures with great anticipation. Please include a photo of both barrel assemblies lying right next to one another, and showing the Winchester address stamp forward of the rear sight.

    Jon,

    This last bit of information is bad news[:(]. The circle "P" with a circle "WP" (superposed letters) definitively tell me that it is not a factory original Model 1892 two-barrel takedown set. Instead, somebody ordered factory new replacement barrels, and then built them into a two-barrel set.
