I shoot the 280rem on a regular basis, it being one of my favorite deer cartridges. What I've read about the ackley version make it out to just about reach 7mmRemMag velosities with some bullets. Mag capacity for -06 cases is generally one or two more then magnums is another plus for it. But, if you are wanting it for extreem bench rest accuracy type shooting I can't say as I've ever read or heard of it being inherently accurate, like say the PPC or BR cartridges. I probably don't need to say this, but ackley cartridges are not factory made and you need to reload or have access to someone who does. You can shoot nomal non-ackley rounds in it, which fireforms them, but you won't get the velosity increase that way. I hope this helps.

    jray4059,

    280casecomparison.jpg

The cartridge on the left is a standard .280 Remington and the case on the right is the Ackley Improved fireformed version. The angle of the shoulder is usually 40 degrees on the Ackley Improved cases and the case body is blown out to a straighter taper.

The .280 AI is not considered to be a "Benchrest" cartridge but it is getting some use in F-Class prone competitions.

Jarrett Rifles considers the 280 AI about the best there is for long range deer hunting. So says my loading manual.

I have one and it's a sweetheart even if it is in a VZ-24 Mauser. It was always my favorite general hunting rifle until I got my hands on a new Factory 7mmsaum and it has a accuracy edge on the old 280.................

I have one on a rem700 action,...and it is one bang-up rifle. It shoots every load under MOA. They thrive on RL22 and H4831sc

I just wanna know when nononsense is going to do a "giveaway" on that lowest rifle. The really nice Mauser.

As noted it can be a great cartridge especially for long range. It sounds like since you do a little benchrest you would at least be able to work with someone who reloads. Until you get your own of course.

I wouldn't want it pounding on my shoulder all day for short range bench shooting. but in long range shooting with that high BC it would be a great rifle to obtain if the price was right. -good luck

Thank you guys for all the feedback. Had a chance to shoot this rifle today and I am going to purchase it. My son and I are avid reloaders. I think we can work up a good load for this rifle.
