Winchester XTR Featherweight 270

I have acquired an unfired .270 XTR Featherweight from the widow of a deceased close friend and I'm curious as to its year of production. It has serial number G16383xx. Adding to my curiosity is the recoil pad has "Winchester" on it rather than USRA as I have been told it should have. My understanding is that XTR Featherweights were made from 1981 to 1989. I have found Winchester serial number/production dates on a number of sites but it appears my serial number is slightly beyond the ending sequence for Winchester. Can anyone shed any light on this. Thanks for the help.

The first featherweights were made before USRA started putting their Butt plate on them They had the Winchester butt plate I don't know what serial number was before or after this change . Can you tell if this is the butt plact "FACTORY FIT" that came on your rifle.? Nice rifle IMHO the best looking of any brand of lighter weight rifles but They will have sharp recoil.

Thanks for the quick replies. And yes, the recoil pad certainly looks factory although I suppose someone could have changed it at some point. The rifle looks as new as the day it left the factory, not a knick on it, with a beautiful looking stock. I'll keep my eyes out for more info on this rifle. BTW, I've been called many names some of which have been Don, Donald, Dummy, etc., but the correct version is my given first name of Dan. Thanks again for the responses...

Just to follow-up on this topic. If my ole eyes could see better this whole issue wouldn't of come up. You see, I took a look at the butt plate again on this fine rifle and sure enough it says "Winchester" in pretty big letters. But beneath that at the bottom says "U.S. Repeating Arms Co." So not mystery in this after all. Surely not a Winchester proper gun and most likely made in the mid 80s. Whenever or if ever USRA publishes it's SN for their Mod 70s I'll know the exact year but for now, thanks to all who responded...

Good morning DWilson: Actually the Md 70 Featherweight "XTR" came out in 1980 while Olin still owned Winchester. Early Featherweights have the slim solid red Winchester recoil pad. By late 1981 the recoil pad markings were changed to USRA logo.

I have one of the early ones too! Hang onto it, it was one of the nicer Md 70s made, during the post 64 era. The XTR had the best stock/wood, IMO. Some collectors do pay more for one marked "Winchesr" vs USRA.

    Regards Dave
