+P Ammo...Is it necessary?

I've been researching a bit on personal defense ammo for my Kimber Ultra CDP II .45 ACP. I can pick up a box of 50 230gr. Speer Gold Dot for about $22 at a local store vs. $17 for a box of 20 200gr. +P Speer Gold Dots. I really like having the box of 50 because it gives me more to practice with at the range without breaking the bank. So, I'm curious for opinions about whether the higher pressure/velocity is really necessary, and if anyone has any good online references to back it up? Thanks.

I bought Speer Gold Dot 230gr +p's at the gun show from GA Arms for $17 for 50.

I don't know that they are nessisary but I choose to carry them as a defence round.

I practice with 230gr FMJ standard loads from GA Arms (factory reloads) that I get for $115 for 500.

practice with FMJ, no reason (after a reliabilty check) to burn either expensive. either is fine.
In 9mm I use +p+ for carry, but .45 does not really matter

How long ago was that? According to Speer's website, they don't make the 230gr. in +P, but then again, their website doesn't list a box of 50 for anything.

I just bought some about a month ago.

GA Arms buys all the stuff from Speer and loads it themselves from what I understand.

Here is the page at GA Arms:

I did notice that the price went up to $18.50 for 50.

The ammo is great stuff and it is about all I buy anymore. They have for most all calibers and thier prices are pretty good.

The +P stuff is necessary if I'm carrying my .38 ultra light or my Glock 9mm, it puts them on an equal with the larger rounds. If I'm carrying my .45 I don't care cause it'll take any human down with one well placed shot.
The only reason for practice is that my Glock 19 will not cycle with CorBon 147+P. Does great with Hydra Shok 124 +P+. You do need to know that up front.
Just like Seecamp, I've got all three calibers. Larry ain't kidding, Silvertips is the only round that cycles reliably.

Just an opinion here, but +p is not necessary, and certainly not in a 45. You're putting a higher pressure round into a gun that isn't necessarily designed around that kind of pressure (although certainly a kimber can take it).

You're going to put a hole in someone almost 1/2 an inch, and it's going to go pretty deep.

I think #1 concern is making sure the gun cycles the ammo, and #2 is you hit what you aim at. For years, simple round nose bullets were used, and did an AWFUL lot of damage. I hear people talk about how someone's leather jacket stopped a .25; I say its either BS or falls under "sh-t happens". You get hit with a .25, you are going to be in for a world of hurt.

Personally, I use hollow points, and I have found that Remmington Golden Sabers work the best in the widest variety of handguns. However, I wouldn't feel bad with S&B 230 grain JRNs in a 45.

A .25 cal? Well I would believe a .22 but from what I have heard, the .25 is even less powerful than a .22. Also, it may depend on what type of leather. If it is armored then it will be harder to penetrate, but not so much for a 9mm or higher powered gun.

To *-r-done: Hi, givette here. You mentioned GA arms as using speer components. When you buy your .45ACP in 500 rd. lots, is the brass new or once-fired? Thanks, Joe

EDIT: I'm asking because your link says "page not found". Joe

The speer is all new components including brass. But I only buy it in 50 round lots.

I buy the factory reloads in 500 round lots.

I think they changed there web site. Try this link:
