What's the difference between weaver and picatinny

Someone asked me the difference between a weaver style rail and a picatinny rail. I told him what I thought, but does anyone have a definitive distinction between the two?

thickness of the rail, size of gap. one is compatable wiht the other, but not vicey-versa

Yes, Weaver type rings will fit the picatinny mount. Only difference between the two is that the picatinny has a whole bunch more slots for the ring bolts, as compared the the 3 or 4 normally cut on the Weaver single base mount.

Picatinny rails are to goverment specs as to the spacing and size. Other wise they are about the same.
