I am planning on getting a S&W .460. Will probably use it on deer this fall. Which barrel length would you suggest? I handled the 5" and 8 and 3/8". The short barrel was much handier but would the longer barrel
be better for accuracy? Any experience with either? Thanks for any replies.

I hunt with handguns. However, I have not used the 460. Generally, the longer bbl provides more distance between the sights, providing a better chance of aiming accurately, plus it will provide additional velocity. If you mount a scope on it, looks a lot better, IMHO, than the shorter bbl.

That said --- I have used 5 1/2" bbls with open sights and not found them to be less accurate nor did I find that the performance was inadequate. With the 460 if you hit 'em right, it does not matter whether the muzzle velocity was a few fsp more of less. They will have a big hole through them.

Get the one that you want. Shoot it a lot. Good hunting.
