Is it possible to put a 10/22 barrel on the 77/22? Or is it impossible? Are the barrel mounting systems the same?

you cannot. you can use the 77/22 barrel on a 10/22 but you have to use a shim kit. the shank on the barrel is longer on the 77/22.

It the shank is only longer couldn't I put it in the lathe and cut the shank longer.

yes you can but the notch for the barrel clamp will also have to be recut if you don't use the spacer kit. cheaper and easier just to buy an aftermarket barrel. if you haven't used the RimfireCentral.com forum you need to check it out.
