expanding necks correctly

How does one expand the neck of a case from one caliber to a larger caliber? Shouldn't it be done in steps? How large should each step be?

Sometimes fireforming is a viable option. Last time I did it I used 8 grains of fast burning pistol powder over the primer. Fill the rest of the case up with Cream of Wheat to the top. Compress a TP Wad over the C of W to keep it in place. Make sure the extractor maintains the correct head space of the cartridge, or you will have problems . Be prepared for a lot of funny looks at the range. Most folks don't have a clue to what the white powder is being fired and they have a tendency to get a bit excited until you paint them a picture.

Steps are correct for larger changes. Lube inside of case neck with Lee case lube via qtip. 7mm to 30 cal to 8mm to ... You may want to consider anealling the necks of used brass first.

One of the things I like about the Hornady dies is the expander button, which works well for me when making .250 out of .224, .257 from .244 or .284 from .257; the above all in 1 swipe. Larger jumps, I'd take in steps.

    5mmgunguy,

Take two steps to do it. Or, if you can find a sizing expander. I have one in my 7mm TCU dies. That round is expected to be able to be resized from the .223 up to the 7mm though. It is a very long and tapered expander and plenty of lube is a good thing here. I know I have seen them in the past. check Midway-usa or Brownells.

    Edit:

What exactly are you wanting to resize to and from?

When I need brass for my 6 and 6.5 mm TCU's, I size my 223 cases to 6mm after annealing the brass. When I need 6.5 cases I make them out of 6mm cases. Going direct from 223 to 7mm is quite a jump and you might split some case necks if they aren't annealed well enough.
