What is the best quality heavy barrel 300 WSM under $1000?

I may have a chance to go elk hunting with a buddy of mine. I'm gonna borrow his 300 WSM. I am not very familiar with this catridge. Can anybody tell me about it. Anyone own one? Thanks

I am looking at buying a new rifle for deer and black bear rifle. i was considering a Kimber in 300 wsm. Is this caliber worth the price or should I stick with the ol 30-06 Is the short mag here to stay or will it go the way of the 284 winchester

    Thank you

I shot on the rifle match team when I was in the service, we used
M1A's, we shot at some pretty good distances. I was just wondering
what's the max distance, effective range?
I use to hunt with a 308, I shot a white tail in a bean field at 400 yrds. that was the longest shot I ever made to bring down game.
But I know the 300WSM got more punch!

    thanks

I have a Savage 12BVSS in 300 WSM. It shoots every bit as well as my SIG STR 970 in 300 WM and my HS Precision in 300 RUM. I'm sure there are others that are just as good as the Savage, they might push the $1K limit a bit. The Savage is about $800.00.

I would give the Savage the nod for 'off the shelf accuracy'. The 12BVSS or, I just looked at yesterday, a 12FVSS.

A savage for sure - I have a 12BVSS and it shoot into 1/2inch if I can do my part. Burris scope. don't go cheap on the scope

Don't forget the Howa 1500. I can do a 1.25" group at 100yd, and let's be honest, I'm not the greatest shot in the world so I know my rifle can even do better than that.

+1 though to the Savage Accutrigger!

One important issue to consider is your tolerance to recoil. I see lots of people at the local range here in CO with shiny new 300 Magnums preparing for elk season. Most can barely keep shots on paper due to flinching. I bought a 300 Win Mag long ago, found myself inventing reasons NOT to take it to the range, and sold it. If you can find a 308 or 30-06 that fits and you can shoot well, buy it. Either one will handle the hunts you're planning just fine.

If recoil is a problem, go with the Browning BAR. 869.00 at Gander Mt.Ther is very little recoil and it shoots great also.

The Savage...really no serious competition from any manufacturer for that price range, and I would stack the Savages up against many guns in the $1000 to $1400 and guarantee they would evaluate favorably.

I had the Weatherby Vanguard in 300 wsm and it would do moa also. Had it topped with a Burris scope and for way less than 1000.00...bull

Tikka makes the T3 Varminter Stainless and T3 Super Varminter in 300 WSM. However, Beretta has chosen not to import either of these to the US, if I understand their website correctly. If you can somehow get your hands on one from another distributor outside the US, they will probably run circles around the Savages.

The Browning A-Bolt Target is offered in 300 WSM. MSRP on this rifle is $1389, and most likely, retail prices will be in excess of your $1000 indicated target. However, I would surmise that this rifle may be superior to a number of its competitors, including the Savage. For example, it has an adjustable comb and a single set trigger. Everyone has their preferences, but I would strongly prefer a good single set trigger to the Savage's Accutrigger.
