AR-15 .22MAGNUM Conversion Kit

Would think that the AR15 would be a perfect platform for a .22 magnum conversion kit. Does anyone make one? I would like to have one or 2 if they did.. I have a couple of the .22 LR ones. Thanks in advance!

Never seen or heard of one.
I bet Black Dog Machine could come up with a magazine.
Not sure it would be profitable though?

The 22WMR presents some special hurtles in a semi-auto or select fire configuration. The elevated pressures must drop before the bolt opens, and to retard that in a blow back action, weight is usually added to the bolt. Therefore, the mechanism, becomes ammo specific, as it will not take all the lighter available ammo, as it has to be designed for the heavier bullet weight and higher pressures. Some like AMT even went to the trouble of gas assisting by having gas ports into the chamber wall area to equalize the pressures before opening. If I am not mistaken, Volquartsen, and Magnum Research( I know this one as a buddy has one), use the weighted bolt principal, and they function very well with 40 grainers.

This all said, it would be a work of art and engineering to accomplish one that would do the AR-15 justice.

    EDIT:

    perry shooter,

I ask why too in a semi-auto, as that is so much fuss to go thru. Volquartsen seems to have a very accurate rifle that is fairly reliable. As why to the cartridge choice? That particular round has a good application for medium range pest control, of medium sized game in semi populated farm rich area's. It is very quiet compared to the 223, especially in area's wherre a suppressor is not legal, and does not lure the ears of PETA. Them there critters can eat a lot of young apple trees, and the 22WMR is effective to 125 yards or so with one well placed shot.

JUST my opinion but WHY the 22 long rifle is cheap to shoot but the 22 mag will cost almost as much as 223 and more then 223 if you reload the 223.

Perry- same reason that 410 and 28 g cost more than 12 g dove loads- they don't make as much of it. Think that is bad, price out some 348 Winchester! Know the shortest verse in the Bible? Jesus wept.

Why not look for some cartridge adapters and just use your 223 upper? You'd need to cycle by hand, but since the bore diameter is the same you'll probably end up with better accuracy than a 22lr conversion rattling down your 223 bore...

I'd like to see a .17rem upper and mag conversion for an AR. I think that would be fun ;)

That shouldn't take much, as they have them in 204 Ruger. That is just a step up in bullet diameter, and i believe they use the standard magazines for the 5.56/223.

Yea, I don't think it would take anything other than a barrel. Colt made a few AR's that actually shoot .222rem (not .223rem) which is the case the .17rem is built on. The magazines, bolt face, and everything would work, just change out the barrel. But I don't believe anyone makes a .17rem AR barrel. One could have a blank cut and profiled, then have an AR barrel extension put on the back, but thats machining and money. Maybe a future project for me one day.

If you are looking for an AR-15 upper that would perform at about 25% more fps than the magnum, the AR-57 in 5.7x28mm is a good choice. I recently purchased one and got rid of my .22 LR and .22 WMR rifles and now only "plink" and varmint shoot with it. I had a custom 20" barrel made for it and I also reload to 1) keep the cost down to around $.20 a round (comparitive to the v-max .22 WMR costs) and 2) I can use different weights. You won't find any .22 WMR (.22 Magnum) with a 50 round magazine that's as reliable.
