627-0 what have I got?

Hi everyone, I recently bought a 627-0 S&W that was a German export, has German markings, and a handbook printed in German. It has a 5 1/2 inch barrel with a full underlug and a non-fluted cylinder, and wears S&W fingergroove combats. The rifling is of a type I have not seen before. The bore is very shiny with single thin lines for rifling that appear cut in possibly by hand; no "lands and grooves" just these single very thin lines cut into the bore. It is an interesting gun, and whatever you all have on it would be appreciated. Thanks, Flapjack.

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson shows a product code 170123 Model 627 made for export with a 5" barrel. No more details, but unlikely many folks got to see any of this model.

Photos would help, especially serial number & number of rounds. Also, I'm betting there is no importer marking, which it would have if it were actually exported.

I haven't a clue what the rifling is; I guess it's possible the bore was not completely finished, but I have never heard of that happening.

When S&W makes a special run of guns, they often make a few extra & hold them for a while, just in case something happens to a few guns & they must supply replacements. If not needed, they are shipped to a single distributor for sale. That is most likely what yours is. It is quite collectible, especially if you have the original box.

    Neal

Neal-it has a 5 1/2 inch barrel-I haven't figured out how to post photos yet. Send me your email and I'll send some pics in an attachment. Thanks, flapjack rovingpatrol7777@cox.net

Dan, Is it a 6 shot or 8 shot? Thats a very interesting piece you have there. The product code 170123 is for a 5" gun with fluted 6 shot cylinder, and you have a 5 1/2" with a non-fluted cylinder.

I have never seen a Smith with German markings and coming with a handbook printed in German. I suspect you might have a Smith knock-off made in Germany.

If you could post some clear photos it would help.
