1968 bar high powered rifle

I was recently given a BAR high powered rifle. It is still in the original box with the reciept from when my grandfather bought it in 1968. it has never been fired. Anyone have any idea what it might be worth?

What caliber and grade?

The basic Grade I from that period, in a common caliber, Blue Book shows a NIB at about $1150 (Belgian made gun, vs assembled in Portugal for later guns) A higher grade gun, or more uncommon or magnum calibers are worth more.

Does it have any gold accent work, or actual engraving on it? Is the wood particularly nicely grained? They were done in field grade through grade 5 which was profusely engraved and inlaid.

The wood is very nice. There is no gold accent. and there is engraving on the metal.

If there is just a little accent scroll work, number one. If there is more scroll work and no accent inlay/gold, then you have a grade 2, but I doubt that. In todays market, and bearing in mind it is not a higher grade gun, I would guess around $800 to $900 in todays market with the economy in such a mess.

I would assume that it is an early grade I, as they had some scroll work on the reciever. The value of it is PRICELESS, as it was your grandfather's, and part of your heritage. For insurance purposes it is valued at $1500.00.
