German Double Shot Signal Pistol (WW2 Era)

Friend of mine found this recently among his grandfather's things... He messaged me some pics from an iPhone.
From what I can gather it's a 27mm Walther 'Doppel Schuss' no. 912/N440 Signal Pistol, manufactured 1939 - probably for the Kriegsmarine. I'll include the pictures sent to me below.

I'm looking for confirmation/insight/any other information you have on the piece, or at the very least perhaps someone could point me to someone that might know more. Thanks in advance.

You might do a search for articles by these two authors. Both specialized in Flare Guns, and have written in various publications like Gun Digest and it's spinoff Gun Collectors Digest.

More than any other nation in WWII the Germans loved flare guns! Yours is a Walther SLD (Signal und Leuchtpistol). As you guessed, these were made for the Navy, The Walther banner marking found on your example was discontinued in in 1940 and after that all further guns were simply marked with the Walther ac production code. There were also variations made of stainless steel as well as an alloy framed version, but these are seldom seen. Your gun looks to be in fine shape and would no doubt have considerable appeal to someone who collects these flare guns.
