Shoulder the gun and line up the rear sight with the front sight such that the tip of the front sight is at your desired point of impact, and the two "ears" on the rear sight and the flat part of the front sight are all in a straight line. Like so:

Once sights are aligned, pull trigger.

To adjust the rear sight for elevation (which I think it what you are actually asking), press on the two tabs on either side of it with your thumb and index finger and slide it forward or backward. As you slide forward the rear sight will elevate, to compensate for greater shooting distance. You stop the sight at a notch, and you can go from 1 to 10.

The line opposite the listed number represents the distance from the target of your elevation zero. EG, if you slide the sight so that its front edge is at the line opposite the number "3", your front sight should be zeroed to hit a target at 300 meters. For "5", 500 meters, etc.

Needless to say, numbers greater than "3" are probably pretty optimistic! Whether or not you can actually hit anything at 500-1000 meters is a another matter, but in theory a group of infantry could fire volleys for field effect at that distance.

The lowest setting, I believe is 100 yards, which should have you covered from 0-100 yards. Some of the older guns will have their sights calibrated in "Arshini", an older Russian unit of distance, but unless someone has replaced your standard sight with an obsolete older one, all of the M44 sights should be calibrated in meters.

Windage is adjusted by drifting the FRONT sight right or left in its dovetail. If you need to do this, a sight pusher is advisable, rather than tap. . .tap. . .tapping with a brass hammer.
