Stripped Screw Holes in 10/22 Receiver

I have an old Ruger 10/22 with some stripped scope mounting holes in the aluminum receiver. How would you repair that? Is welding the only way? Any opinion of JB Weld?

Would not want to replace the receiver for this. Have thought of just adding another screw hole behind the one that's still good. Not my favorite solution either.

No hurry, thinking about it.

Drill and tap the next size bigger. If you looks there should be some info online for doing that.

Brownell's have oversize 6X48 screws and an oversize tap to match for just such repairs. Screws are slightly larger than a #6 screw and all you have to do is run the tap in the stripped out hole making new threads.

    How about a threaded insert?

Probably too small for any kind of insert. The best solution is just to tap one size larger. It will look and function good as new. [:D] There is nothing sacred about the original size hole. This one will be only a few thousandths bigger. No one will be able to tell.

I would try to find someone that carries Heli Coils, find out the thread size and search on line for the ne you need.

Like it was said above. Go to the next size up. Brownells has what you need. The 10-22 receiver is aluminum and the scope mount holes strip out very easily.

Next size up is best. Be certain to not go with fasteners that are too long and will interfere with the operation of the action.

The next industry standard size up for scope mounting, would be the 8x40 thread. I have had to do this on a couple remington 742 recievers, as the bases for them are getting scarce. Just go slow, and take your time, and do not rush. Remember when mounting your base, not to go more than 30 inch pounds of torque on your fasteners. If you don't have an inch-pound torque wrench, get one...you can use it for torquing the scope ring cap screws too.

Absolutely do NOT use J-B Weld. That is false advertising about fixing screw holes. You would just end up digging it out anyway.
