Removing An Oil Finish

A recommendation, not a question.

I bought a Win Mdl 60 on Saturday. That evening, I decided to clean up the stock. We were out of Murphy's Oil Soap so I tried some other household cleaners. The first 2 were duds. The 3rd, Greased Lighting, didn't clean but did strip the oil off! Very slowly. Plus, it is removing the gun oil. I doubt that I'm getting all of the oil out of the pores, but that's ok. The wood coloring is unchanged although the rag will indicate otherwise. All I did was spray some on an old tee shirt and started rubbing. No smell like with mineral spirts or turpentine. I didn't need gloves and anything on your hands washes off with soap & water.

While my original plan was to just clean the stock, I decided to spend some extra time and take as much of the old finish as possible, steam some dents out and put a couple coats of tung oil on.

You might want to try the stuff. My wife bought the Greased Lightning for $3 a qt in a sprayer bottle at a chain grocery store. Might have some use for the very last stage of removing cosmoline too.
